Who are you impressed by?
Why are you impressed?
I realize those may sound like funny questions, but they are important.
The qualities you find impressive in other people tell you a lot about yourself and what you actually value. They also shape what you prioritize and pursue and who you end up becoming.
Unfortunately, we aren’t automatically impressed by what is actually impressive. Instead, we are naturally impressed by the same kinds of things that are impressive to people who aren’t even believers.
Jeremy Pierre writes:
We’re impressed with people who’ve captured the things we desire. The problem is, without Jesus, we naturally desire earthly things: money, fame, and success. We can only desire the right things with the help of Jesus. And that’s no automatic process. It takes discipline to be impressed with the right things and to steward our desires properly.” Did you ever think about that?
It takes discipline to be impressed by the right things. You have to think about this. You have to make a choice to be impressed by what is impressive.
But what are the right things to be impressed by?
There’s the question.
As we look at Titus chapter 1 together this Sunday, we are going to see God gives us some help by listing a number of qualities that He looks for in a leader.
And, at first you may think His list is not very remarkable.
But that’s part of what makes it so important. Our response says less about the list than it does us. We need help knowing what we will be impressed by and what we should imitate. And hopefully as we study this passage together this Sunday, we’ll get it.
Come ready! Come expectant! Come praying!
God’s Word can change your life,
Joshua

This past week we began our Bible Reading Project once again. We spent this Thursday morning reviewing the message of the Pentateuch. Specifically we asked why the New Testament writers thought the first five books of Moses were not about obeying the law to earn salvation but instead designed to point us toward salvation through faith in what God is going to do through His Messiah. You might want to check it out.
